If you can't see Bangla contents at all, first you need to install FONTS. If you just want to be able to read/see Bangla, this is all you need to do. Just install the fonts. If you want to write in Bangla, then you need to follow the additional instructions below. So please don't let this long thread intimidate you. It's very simple. Download the fonts and put them in the right place. Two steps!

1) DOWNLOAD- UNICODEFONTS.zip

2) and do the followings:

..::HOW-TO-INSTALL-FONTS::..

Windows users:
--------------
Simply extract all the font files to your C:\Windows\Fonts directory. Replace C:\ with your system drive.

Linux Users:
------------
In GNOME you can open Nautilus and type fonts:/// in the address bar and simply drop them in there, once X is restarted they should work. Or you can put them in a proper dir in /usr/share/fonts yourself and they should work as well when X is restarted.

Macintosh Users:
----------------
Extract the font files into Library\Fonts folder. You can also open each file and install one at a time using The Font Book.

Now Configure your system to display Bangla:

Windows users can install Complex Language support with this tool at:
DOWNLOAD - http://www.omicronla...mplex-full.html

OR you can manually enable support for it. To do that, follow these instructions:
You will need - Windows XP SP2, original XP CD, and a restart may be required.
1. Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options
2. In the Language tab, select Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)
3. Click Ok.

Now you should see Bangla. You may install additional fonts and softwares to make contents look pretty.

If you want to WRITE in Bangla, you need both fonts and softwares.

Finally Let's configure your browser since you have your system configured, fonts installed. What good are they if they don't show up nicely on your browser?

Internet Explorer
1. From Tools menu, select Internet Options.
2. From Internet Options window, click on Fonts (on General Tab).
3. Click on the drop down list for Language Script. Select Bengali from this drop down list.
4. Select SolaimanLipi for Web Page Font (you may choose other fonts).
5. Then click OK.

Opera
1. In Opera go to Tools > Preferences OR press CTRL+F12.
2. In general tab, click on the Details button.
3. Click the Add button.
4. Select Bangla/বাংলা from the list and OK.
5. Go to Advanced > Fonts > International Font
6. In the Writing System, choose "Bengali" and under "Normal font", you should see the Bangla fonts installed in your system. From the list, choose "Solaiman Lipi"
7. Click OK. Close the Preference dialog box. Your Opera Browser is now ready to perfectly render Bangla web pages.

Firefox
1. From Tools menu, select Options.
2. From this Options window, click on Contents.
3. Click on Advanced button in Fonts & Colors section.
4. Click on the drop down list for option Fonts For. Select Bengali from this list.
5. Complete all the options and select Solaiman Lipi for all of them and OK it.

ALL DONE!
If you want to WRITE in Bangla, you need both fonts and softwares.

After testing out various Bangla typing software, we recommend these softwares and mentioning their purposes and limitations as of today.

1. Avro Keyboard - http://www.omicronlab.com/
This is probably your best bet. It is not a word processor but rather something like a plug-in for your Windows system that allows you to type in Bangla. You can easily switch between Bangla and English language by pressing F12. Avro has a very well laid out documentation than any other Bangla softwares today. We really wish this was an independent full featured word processor. Maybe it will happen in the future. But most importantly, it supports UNICODE. That means the texts you type are displayed as you entered them as long as any UNICODE compliant font is available.

2. BanglaWord - http://banglaforums.net/files/
This is a full featured word processor. However it does not support UNICODE standard. That means you can only use it's default font "Amar Bangla Normal" for typing. Still I like it very much because the font looks really good and I use it to make Bangla documents. For personal use, I recommend BanglaWord over Avro Keyboard. But if you are reaching a wider audience and need multi-platform support for your documents, go with Avro keyboard.

3. Bangla Editor Project - http://banglaforums.net/files/
This is somewhat UNICODE supporting JAVA based tiny word processor saving files in RTF format. It is severly limited. But it does the basic job well. You can't really format too much with this and also limited font support. But it is very light and available on all system platform since it is java based. Linux and Mac users will appreciate this very much. BanglaPlain is the default font for this.

Finally, I'll say try out all of them since they are very small, light resource using programs. All have plus and negative poitns. Avro, and BEP are UNICODE, while BW isn't, texts in BW is pretty and not that good looking on the other two. BEP is platform independent.

*OPTIONAL*

If anybody else is bothered with the very ugly Vrinda font, there's a solution now. You can get "Font Fixer" to change it.

Try this very easy to use simple program to change Vrinda. Link is below: After downloading, just choose Solaiman Lipi font.
CODE
http://www.vistaarc.com/downloads/font-fixer/

There is a problem with this fixer though. You will not be able to type properly in Microsoft Word. You can use text editors such as Windows NOTEPAD. It works fine there. Also browsers seem to be unaffected by this change. I will verify further about the Word issue.

Rumana, you need to have Bangla fonts installed first. THen you also need to install "Avro". After you have those, you can change the keyboard mode by pressing F12. Then when you press "ami", it will type that word in Bangla.

Your solution is posted on post # 5 of this thread. Install the "Font Fixer" and choose SolaimanLipi font instead of Vrinda. You have to restart your computer after that. Let me know what happens.
